Description

Phenolic hard asbestos is a layered material made from asbestos fabric that has been impregnated with phenol formaldehyde and resol. It is used in a variety of applications, including:

  • Manufacturing: Used to make compressor blades, brake linings, friction devices, and mechanical coupling details
  • Heat insulation: Used as a heat-insulated material

Phenolic hard asbestos is non-toxic under normal conditions, but dust can be created during processing that can be harmful to humans. The dust can irritate the respiratory system and open areas of the body.

Asbestos is a known occupational hazard that can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other diseases. Many phenolic molding compounds contained asbestos before the mid-1980s, and were used in a wide range of products, including:

  • Electrical components
  • Household appliances
  • Refrigerators
  • Ovens
  • Military grade equipment
  • Automobile parts
  • Aircraft and weapon systems

Here are some properties of phenolic asbestos cloth sheets:

  • Ultimate bending: At destruction, not less than 90–108 MPa
  • Charpy impact test: Not less than 26–29 kJ/m²
  • Temperature constancy: Not less than 225–250°C
  • Water absorbing: Not more than 2%
  • Working temperature -40°C to +130°C

Asbestos was commonly used as a filler in phenolic plastics because it increased heat resistance and provided strength. Asbestos fibers also improved resistance to moisture, acids, and other chemicals
